"Can't Hold Us Down!" say the Little Bolts
This week I was all over the Rolling Acres building assisting teachers with getting students acclimated to the Chromebooks. There were some definite trial and errors, but we persisted. First, I assisted Pam Brown's Kindergarten class with getting used to the touch-pad, logging in, and using Starfall. The kids were LOVING it. We had them log in and out several times and boy were those kiddos proud to show us they remembered after one try.
I also had the pleasure of visiting Ame Shaffer's second grade class during math. Mrs. Shaffer must be working hard because her students were proud to show me that they could login without looking at their cards! After they logged in (purely by memory), I showed her students how to access the GO Math bookmark and walked them through the personal math trainer. These students also worked with the Promethean board to manipulate math problems. These students were very bright. Good job Little Bolts!
Little Bolts Shine Bright!
This week I had the pleasure of assisting Erin Hahn with her Kindergarten class as they logged onto their Chromebooks for the very first time. Don't ever doubt the capabilities of the Kindergarten class. These students were logging on, learning to use the touch-pad, and playing Starfall within the hour!!!! That is quite an accomplishment for our Little Bolts. I was proud of their enthusiasm and maturity for learning something that took a little time and a few tries to get it right. These youngsters showed perseverance pays off in the end!
Maple Avenue Move on Over-Rolling Acres and Alloway Creek are Here!
This week's "Teacher Features" are from Rolling Acres and Alloway Creek. LASD has more than one building with amazing technology integration. This week, I present to you Ashlie Rittle and Andrew Krape. Now if you do not know these teachers, you are about too.
Andrew Krape teaches music to K-5, but for this feature he was teaching our very own 3rd graders how to use the iPads! For this special occasion, he not only instructed them how to use the iPads, but sang WITH them about the iPads. Have a look here.

After teaching them how to use the iPads, he exposed them to apps that taught rhythm. I don't know about you, but I have no rhythm so hats off to Mr. Krape and the third grade!
As if Andrew wasn't enough, we also have Ashlie Rittle of Alloway Creek with her fifth graders lighting the way with technology integration in SEVERAL ways all at once. Below you can see how she had several technology stations set up. Ashlie would work with large group using ActivInspire with her GO Math curriculum while small groups of students would rotate through the Chromebook stations in her room to answer a question presented through Socrative. She eventually discussed the Socrative question with the entire class making sure all students understood the question and answer. No surprise here that a large majority of her students knew EXACTLY what was going on! Way to go Ashlie!

Teacher Feature-Nothing is "Two" Good for Bolt Country!
Last week, I shared my first teacher feature and the Bolts would not stop at one teacher feature! I shared one teacher's incredible classroom and this week-I bring you two teacher features. Yes, you heard correctly-two incredible teachers here at LASD!!! I visited the classrooms of Jason Peglow and Tracey Willet in Maple Avenue Middle to find some great technology integration happening! I quote Mr. Peglow about the happenings in his classroom. "At the beginning of class students work on grammar, vocabulary, or writing and then when completed get onto the computers to work on whatever project coincides with what we are working on in class for that week, month, or unit. At this time my 7th grade classes are constructing their personalized blog spaces using the Edublogs site (edublogs.org) and ultimately will join the Student Blogging Challenge which goes international to post and comment to other students all over the world. It is used to encourage writing, proofreading, and social online etiquette." WOW!!!! Ms. Willet had her students rotating around 3 stations and using Chromebooks to read QR Codes that directed students to varying websites for pertinent information regarding her curriculum. These teachers are unbelievable!
OUR FIRST TEACHER FEATURE!!!!
Our very own Mr. Larry Baumgardner of Maple Avenue is our very first Teacher Feature! I was lucky enough to be invited to watch him use QR codes for inquiry. Students worked in groups of four to scan the codes and research a certain topic pertaining to World Geography. The QR codes took them to websites and slideshows where they needed to complete Flipbooks. The students were collaborating, communicating, and using critical thinking skills!
Jealous are you?!?! Don't be! I can come to your classroom too. Just send me an email and next week, this could be you! If you are shy, I can come, observe, and give feedback without adding you to the website.
